After church Sunday, my dad reminded me of a story from my childhood. He was reading the paper or something one day and I came and asked him if we could play checkers. He said “No, maybe later”…later came (which was probably about 2 minutes)…answer was still no. I just kept asking though and finally I went and set up the checkerboard, brought it to him and said, “Red or Black?” Guess what? I got my game of checkers on!
There are two lessons that come to mind through this. Persistence and preparation. Luke 11 says to keep on asking and you will receive what you ask for. However, if you haven’t prepared your heart and mind to believe God has these wonderful things for you, how are you going to receive them?
“And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. ” – Luke 11:9-10
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord” – James 1:5-7
