I absolutely love the story about Elijah and the prophets at Mount Carmel. That’s the one where Elijah challenges them to see who is the one true God. You can read it in 1 Kings 18:20-40. It’s awesome. What stuck out to me today though was this quote from Elijah. He stands in front of King Ahab, all the people of Israel, and all the prophets and says, “How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him! But if Baal is God, then follow him!”
We are constantly wavering between the gods in our lives. You have to decide, which god will you follow?
If the Lord is God, follow him! But if your spouse is God, follow him! If money is God, follow him! If a career is God, follow him! If fame is God, follow him! But before you follow any of them, find out which God is going to ignite IN you a fire that causes you to die to your old self and your old ways and make you BETTER! Which one is going to come through for you ALWAYS? Which one will NEVER fail you? Which one will NEVER leave you? Which one can PROMISE you eternal life?
There’s only ONE, yet we waver so much between the God OF this world and the gods IN this world. It’s become so common for us to say, “God wants me to follow Him there…but I’d really like to stay with this person over here and God wants me happy so I’ll stay.” No…we need to stop at, “God wants me to follow Him there!” and GO!
Test God…put your everything into him like Elijah did. He risked his life to challenge these prophets and he was so confident he even mocked them as they poured out EVERYTHING to that god of theirs. We should be following God like this. Not man, not money, not riches or fame, but God the Almighty who sent His one and only Son to die for YOU. He is all that matters and everything else here on earth should be used to teach others to follow Him.
